Hey World,
So I was introduced to the term 'Digital Dating' today. Apparently this has been a term since at least December when MTV aired their Anti-Digital Dating campaign 'A Thin Line". How did I miss this? Have you all heard of it? It apparently deals with the problems that come with sexting and picture messages. Sending a topless pic to your boyfriend you trust so much will 99% of the time be shown to his friends as well. So okay this is a bad idea. But I really like the term Digital Dating.
Since we are becoming a society of tech gadgets I think its very fitting. The commercials say 1 and 5 relationships starts on Match.com or E Harmony or another social dating site. They should be using Digital Dating here! How did you meet? Oh we started Digital Dating back in January. I love that! I think it should catch on!
On another note, this term came about because teens, mostly girls, were experiencing abuse and harassment in middle and high school when their boyfriends would 1) control their phones by checking them and 2) show sexts and naked picture messages to their friends. We all know how teenagers are and its easy to believe that a dirty text or naked photo would circulate through even a large high school very quickly. We are a people far too interconnected to eachother. Twitter, facebook, myspace(does anyone still use that), phones, bbm, everything! Its so hard to become disconnected from the world.
Are we heading towards a spiral of bad events when everyone we know knows everything about us? I even find it far too easy to find things about the cute guy in class I have never met but know his first name and fraternity he is in. I can know within 6 minutes that he has 2 little brothers, his mom is a dentist, his dad a lawyer, originally from NY, moved here when grandma got sick, he studies mechanical engineering and works at olive garden as a server on weekends. All from seeing letters on his shirt one day.
Where does this end? Should it? What do you think....
thanks for reading!
